Braintree Mencap Bridge Club

The Mencap "Bridge Club" has nothing to do with cards! It is a social club for younger adults with a learning disability, and the great news is it has now lowered the age limit so that it can accept people from the age of 16-30 years.
They meet every Wednesday at Charles Leek House, Braintree, from 7-9pm.
The members of the club are responsible for helping to put together the activity timetable, choosing activities that they want to do. Sometimes they all go out for a meal, or take a trip to the seaside, or other times stay at the base and enjoy games, discos, karaoke, cooking and arts and crafts.
It is a perfect, friendly safe environment for young adults to socialise with their peers and learn some new skills whilst making new friends.
If you know of any young adults with a learning disability who could benefit from this club, please take a look at the flyer below, our website or facebook page. Alternatively, contact Jess Leonard for details on 01376 326302.

Weekly Social Group for People with a Learning Disability at Braintree Mencap

It is well documented that people with a learning disability at the age of transition find it very unsettling in the move from childrens to adults services. More often than not, they find that the social opportunities available to them are lost as they out grow the services that they have used and found comfort in since child hood. It is not only the young adult who suffers, but the parents face anguish and uncertainty too.

Everyone can appreciate how important regularity and routine is to someone who is living with a learning disability and therefore our Social Group, also known as "The Bridge" as it bridges the gap between childrens and adult services, runs every Wednesday evening from 7-9pm at Charles Leeks House and only costs £6 to attend. Parents and carers are welcome too, using this as an opportunity to mix with others in the same situation.

Every week we have a different activity and often utilise universal facilities in the local community. All volunteers and well trained staff are youngish in age in order to understand trends and arrange trips and activities that appeal to those between the ages of 18-30. This club is warm, friendly, welcoming, exciting and safe - a great stepping stone for your young adult who is walking the Bridge to Adult Services. Let us hold their hand!

Additional information

*What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness meditation is a practice that promotes greater self-awareness of thoughts, emotions, behaviours and bodily sensations.  It is the art of learning to pay attention more skilfully to your own self as well as the world around you. Mindfulness has been scientifically proven to reduce stress, boost the immune system and initiate brain changes that are linked to an increased sense of well-being.

Mindfulness teaches us to live life in the present moment, seeing what is actually here for us, rather than allowing the mind to constantly pull us back to past events or imagined future occurrences. Many people are turning to mindfulness to gain insight into the way they typically live their lives with a view to cultivating a more peaceful, healthy and contented existence.

This workshop is designed to introduce the concept of mindfulness, provide a brief history and overview of the subject and give a taster of two typical mindfulness meditations that are usually included in mindfulness based study programmes and practices.

Alternative dates and group bookings available on request (minimum of 15 participants required for group bookings). Contact us for more details and directions to our locations.
